What is Emergency Heat?
Emergency heat is a backup heating mode used on heat pump systems. When outdoor temperatures drop too low for the heat pump to operate efficiently, the system switches to an auxiliary heat source—typically electric resistance heat or a gas furnace. Emergency heat bypasses the heat pump entirely and relies solely on this backup source.
Emergency heat should only be used during extreme cold or when the heat pump itself is not functioning properly. Because it consumes significantly more energy, running emergency heat continuously can lead to much higher utility bills.
What Does SEER Stand For?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It measures how efficiently an air conditioning system operates over an entire cooling season. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy-efficient the system.
Modern high-efficiency air conditioners typically range from 14 SEER to 20+ SEER. While higher SEER systems reduce energy consumption, proper installation, duct design, and airflow are just as important as the SEER rating itself.
Do They Still Make Freon?
